4 Building Blocks for Developing an Authentic & Intimate Relationship with God

My relationship with God over the years has come a long way. It has gone from just a tag I wore as a 12 year old reading “Christian” to become the very core of my everyday life. I mean that very deeply. God is my closest friend and companion, and I don’t say that in the one sided way that most people do. I say that to say we, I and God are actually very close. He is close to me, and I am also close to him. I tell him everything, and he helps me out with everything, down to dressing up for church and getting my make up done in record time or finding a cab in time, or needing electricity to iron my dress. Lol. You don’t want to know the crazy things I’ve asked God to do for me in my short life. Haha. You will laugh and laugh.

A deep relationship with God is hard to explain, it’s an entirely different world, an ecosystem that is run by true, pure, unbridled love. It gets overwhelming and encompassing very fast and so it becomes difficult to remember what life was like before. But I know so many people struggle with intimacy with God, for various reasons which I won’t get into. The purpose of this post today is to show you that you too can gain a friend like no other in God. You too, can live free of worry and anxiety because you are secure in everlasting love. Hallelujah! Let’s get to it.

Be honest

I’m not sure why but most of us feel that there are some issues that we cannot talk to God about because they are not spiritual. There’s no greater lie. First of all, everything that happens to you, is spiritual because you are now a Spirit being right? When you gave your life to Christ remember?

“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you…”
— Romans 8:9 KJV

Before you stone me, I don’t mean spiritual as in the witches that use to do people from the village. I’m just trying to change your perspective to see that when it come to God, he sees all of you as important, as spiritual. He doesn’t demarcate and say you know what? Omooba’s attendance in church is much more important than Omooba finding an husband or Omooba getting straight As in school. No o. God is a good dad, better than you think. Be honest with him. Tell exactly how it is. Give it to him straight. He can take it. If you don’t learn to be honest with God you will always have a superficial relationship with him, always. So do better, talk to God. And come to think of it God is actually better than all those people you bear your heart too o. Let me just stop here.

Be Open

On this journey of intimacy, you will find that God also has quite a number of things to tell you. You need to be open. Let him show you the way. One of my favourite parts of scripture is Matthew 11:28-30 in the Message translation.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Matthew 11:28‭-‬30 MSG‬‬

Be open to learn how to live a fulfilling life. Sometimes, the things God will direct you to do will look ridiculous and downright foolish but you have to trust Him and be open to his ways because they bring results and they are ultimately to prosper you. If you build up a wall around yourself, unwilling to let your guard down around him, He will not be able to help you. You will see little change in your life. Open yourself to the God.

Believe that He loves you

The bedrock of every relationship is love. God is not shy about how he feels about you. He died a painful death for your sins just to prove it to you. You must believe that God loves you. It is hard to be intimate with someone whose love you are unsure. God loves you sooooo much. It takes a conscious effort to let that truth sink into your heart. I ran a series on the love of God a few months ago, that might be a good place to start. Read Mediations on God’s love here.

Your sins are completely forgiven

For as long as you feel that you still have a debt to settle with God, he is never going to be your friend. You are always going to be at odds with him. My dad always says the way to lose a friend is to lend him or her a huge sum of money. Lol. The friend will always see you as an enemy because every time he or she sees you they are reminded of their debt. That is how so many people act with God. They think they still have scores to settle with God. Look, let me tell you, you could never pay the price for all you sins. And the ones you know o, and the ones you don’t know o and the ones of your ancestors o, all of them join, you are not enough to pay for everything. You are not as good or powerful as you think you are. You are giving yourself way too much credit if you actually think you can make things right with God on your own. And that is why Jesus Christ, the son of God came to die for our sins. He was the perfect sacrifice, blameless, flawless. Jesus was better than you and I could ever be and that is why he was perfect for the job. And hey, he did the job perfectly too.

So listen dear brother or sister, YOU ARE FORGIVEN OF ALL YOUR SINS, PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE. YOU HAVE BEEN MADE RIGHTEOUS THROUGH CHRIST JESUS. Matter of fact, you can walk up to God’s throne right now and kiss his face if you wanted to, do you know why? It is because you have been made righteous, right with God by the sacrifice of Jesus. On the cross there was a divine exchange, your sinful nature for his holy nature. You are now a child of God, so act like it. If you don’t believe this profound truth, you will never be close with God because you will always feel that you are not enough. But in Christ, Hallelujah! YOU ARE ENOUGH! Woohoo! Praise God.

I hope this has blessed you. As we step into the second half of the year, I believe God wants to become your very best friend, please give him a chance to love on you. God bless you, now and always.
Till next time,
Stay blessed!

Spread the love
