Church Notes #3: Recieving From The Lord

Disclaimer: These are excerpts from my sermon notes, they are not all the exact words of the preacher, they are written as understood by me.

Preached on 17th May 2020 on air by Pastor Amos Adetunji, Senior Pastor Abundant Grace Church, Osogbo

Receiving From The Lord

God wants us to recieve from Him, from one level of grace to a higher level of grace, grace upon grace (John 1:16). We don’t often learn in church how to take from God. That is what this sermon is about. It’s about taking from God, the source of all good things, so as to live an abundant life.

John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven.
John 3:27 ESV

For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:17 ESV

3 areas to recieve from God;

1. Recieve encouragement and Joy from God.

The bible says in 1 Sam 30:6 that

And David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in soul, each for his sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.
1 Samuel 30:6 ESV

There will always be situations that will threaten to steal our joy but let’s also be quick to run to God for encouragement and joy. We should recieve from Him because he is always willing to give. When we are down, we just need someone or something to lift us up. God is here for you. At your service. Allow Him to be your source of encouragement. Human beings can disappoint, but not God. He is always ready to meet your needs.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV

Say after me; The Lord will encourage me.

Jesus said in John 15: 4-5
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:4‭-‬5 ESV

God wants us to stay connected to Him so that we can recieve from Him. The bible also assures us that the joy of the Lord is our strength. The encouragement of the Lord is our strength. We are strengthened when we are encouraged. And God is avaliable to encourage us. It’s time to look away from men and look to God. Nobody talks like him. He speaks straight and directly to our hearts.

2. Recieve restoration and healing

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 14:27 ESV

God does that give the way the world gives. Our God is not a man. When we loose something, we shouldn’t hesitate to ask God for restoration. For your trouble He has promised to give you double (Isaiah 61:7). Hallelujah, that means when we loose something, we should rejoice because God will restore us to even better than before.

I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent among you. “You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.

Joel 2:25‭-‬26 ESV

That’s our God!

There is hope for your future, declares the Lord , and your children shall come back to their own country.
Jeremiah 31:17 ESV

Our God is a God of restoration.

He is also a God of healing. If your health is dwindling, God is here to heal you. He will restore your health or anything that is lost to you in Jesus name. Amen.

For I will restore health to you And I will heal your wounds,’ says the Lord
Jeremiah 30:17a AMP

3. Recieve love and faith

The bible tells us faith worketh by love. When we recieve the love of God we are empowered to have faith for big things.

For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Philippians 2:13 ESV

You recieve the desire first and then the ability to accomplish it follows. God is the one who gives the love and passion for a particular goal, and also the grace to bring it to pass
Let’s take a look at John 15 again

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
John 15:1‭-‬2 ESV

We often read this text as that when he takes the branch away it is to be destroyed but in the original Greek “take away” translates to the word airo which means to lift up. The only translation of the bible that stays true to this is The Passion Translation which says

He cares for the branches connected to me by lifting and propping up the fruitless branches and pruning every fruitful branch to yield a greater harvest.
John 15:2 TPT

Isn’t that just powerful? God doesn’t discard with us in our weaknesses. Oh no, he lifts us up instead. He is the lifter of our heads. Jesus repeatedly lifts people up to be bless them, we see that throughout the gospels (Mark 5:27, 9:27, John 8:8-10, Luke 5:12-13). He knows that you cannot be blessed when you are down. So He lifts you in His love and care, so that you can rise to your full potential.

I hope you have been blessed. I know I have.

Jesus loves you, have a blessed week ahead.

Love,

O.
