Happy New Year beautiful people!
By now all your resolutions have been made and the new year euphoria is already waning, so it feels like a perfect time to put this article out knowing you’d not be preoccupied by unrealistic expectations for the new year. The smoke has cleared and the year isn’t so much new. In that light, let’s get real.
I have highlighted 19 ways to stay alive, happy and sane throughout the year. I hope this will be a place you can return to during tough times as the year progresses and find some helpful solutions.
Lose the comparison
The popular saying goes comparison is the thief of joy. We all have personal experiences to prove that saying true. Let’s all choose to be content this time around. Let’s guard our eyes and hearts. There’s no need to compare, nothing gained whatsoever. Let’s be so consumed with growing and getting better that the thought of comparison is absolutely absurd to us. There so much to do with ourselves this year, there’s no time to waste on frivolities.
Don’t give up, try again.
You will fail at quite a number of things this year as is with every year, everyday even but don’t give up, try again. Don’t be so easily swayed, so easily discouraged. Find the strength to rise again and take on your challenges head on, even if it yields nothing eventually, it would have taught you a thing or two and made you better.
Embrace the mundane and little things
Not until I started spending alot of time in the hospital by virtue of studying medicine did I notice that I take so many little things for granted, like painless movement and clear skin. There’s alot of sadness in the world, but there’s also a lot of good and most times we are so engrossed with the bad that we do not even see the good at all. Let’s enjoy all the goodness of life, the sun, the stars, flowers, all the wonders of nature. Theres so much to stop and enjoy.
Really evaluate your buying this year. Are you living above your means? Are you indebted most of the time, are you broke most of the time? Minimize spending this year. Spend on what matters, don’t spend to impress. If you buy less you can save more and plan better for future expenses and investments.

Dress up like you are going to meet opportunities when you step out the door. The first impression people have of you is your appearance so make sure it’s a good one. And besides, looking good boosts your confidence.

Come out of your cocoon this year. Be confident about who you are. Stand strong. Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity (1 Timothy 4:12 NLT).
Pay attention to your mind feed
Don’t you think it’s interesting that social media calls their timeline a feed. It’s almost like they are robbing the power they have over us in our faces. Be careful what you are putting in your mind. Pay attention, don’t just let anything in, eventually those things determine the way you behave. Towards the end of 2018, I reviewed the people I was following on social media, just to see if I really needed to be following them, if they were bringing any value into my life. What you feed your mind with, whether its social media, music, movies, books, sermons, gossips is who you are. I encourage you to be more sensitive and protective of your mind.
Be a thank-you cloud
Rain down thank-yous. Thank everyone. Thank God every minute. As long as you are breathing free oxygen, mutter a thank you. Let me tell you, nobody owes you anything. No body. Not a kind word, not a compliment, nothing, not even your parents. You could have been aborted. Be grateful. Gratitude increases the value of what you have. It boosts your confidence. Let your year be a thank full one.
Don’t half-heart anything
Halfheartedness has helped no one accomplish anything worthwhile ever. The bible says we should work whole heartedly as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:23). Let your work be commendable, put your whole heart there cause it is worship and God is pleased with good work. God blesses good work. And not just with work should we be wholehearted, let’s be present in our conversations, at events, in activities, being fully committed to whatever we are doing per time.
Have only a few goals.
I know it’s tempting to have a whole new year ahead of you, you want to maximize everyday but reality isn’t picture perfect, some days will be slow. In that vein, I’d advice you only set a few goals for the year at most three, I would pick just one that I know is very important if I were you. Less is more. An advantage of having just one goal is focus. If all your attention is on just one thing, you’ve basically made failure an impossibility.
I was going to say learn, but then aren’t we all learning, and doing nothing with what we’ve learnt? I used to be that way; a cosmos of knowledge, yet it didn’t show much by how I lived. There’s this slim gap between learning or knowing something and actually doing it, that gap is growth. You have to grow. How will everything you are reading now help you this year? Decide to use it to grow. Actually try it out. Everybody can read, not many people grow.
In 2019, people will do crappy things to you, they will step on your toes and so will you step on the toes of others. Decide to be the one that shows grace. Decide to be forgiving. Don’t be like that rich man in one of Jesus’ parables who having been forgiven his own debt, refused to forgive someone who was owing him (Matthew 18:23-35). Jesus has forgiven all our trespasses so lets also expend that grace to others. It doesn’t mean we should keep negative and toxic relationships but it does mean we shouldn’t hold whatever they’ve done against them. Let your heart be light.
Be at peace with yourself
Don’t fight yourself. This year, be on your own side, be in your own corner. Don’t hold grudges against yourself, forgive yourself, be kind to yourself, because you can only love others as much as you love yourself. So take your time to find peace with who you are and motivation to improve where need be. Be your own biggest cheerleader.
Find causes for celebration
There will be many reasons to be sad but there will also be many reasons to celebrate and be glad. Always find causes of celebration. Look for the silver lining. There’s something to be happy about, there’s something to dance about, there’s something to be thankful for. Throw a party, it doesn’t have to be large, share a bottle of wine with your spouse. Treat the whole family to a nice dinner, have a dance party with your younger sister, have a pillow fight with your roommate, buy yourself a gift for aceing that test. Do it! Celebrate!
Be there for someone
Many times we are whining about nobody being there for us, perhaps that’s because we’ve never been there for anyone. I challenge you this year to be there for someone, take care of someone, love someone. They don’t have to be more than one person, just be there. Be a friend.
Enjoy the journey
We are all on different journeys this year. Some of us are getting a degree, some of us are getting married, some of us are going for service, some of us are becoming parents. There are many bumps on the road of these journeys and it’s easy to get distracted by that, but there are also great views. There are people to meet and new things to explore. Let’s endeavor to enjoy the journey. Let breathe in and breath out and enjoy the view.
Develop an habit of spending time with the God daily
Spending time with God consistently is the best decision I have ever made in my life. It changes everything. Your day has direction. It has purpose. You are stable. You are settled. You have peace. You have joy. You experience miracles. You enjoy life. Spend more time with God this year, grow spiritually. Read your bible, go to church, pray, if you give yourself whole heartedly to these things with simplicity and an open heart, I promise you your life will not remain the same.
Have the very best 2019. God bless you!
